Writing Young Adult: A Seattle Regional Chapter event

If you write YA or want to know more about this rapidly expanding book market, don't miss our next meeting. Whether you prefer fiction or nonfiction, Kathleen Ortiz, a Seattle-based agent with New Leaf Literary in New York, and Lish McBride, a well-published YA writer, will explain the ins and outs.

All are welcome, Authors Guild members or not. Kathleen and Lish will take us beyond the obvious (don't talk down; don't dumb down; authentic voice is crucial) to nuances of tone, subject, taboos, and so forth, with some talk of subgenres. We’ll also hear what kind of pitches work, or don’t, and where our experts think the market is going. The total presentation, including time for questions, should run about an hour and change. Social time follows.

The store has an elevator atop the front steps, but to use it, you must message me a few days before the meeting so I can alert Elliott Bay.
Questions, or to RSVP write me, at: seattlechapter@authorsguild.org

SPEAKER BIOS:

Kathleen Ortiz is a literary agent who has over a decade of experience in the industry, both as an agent and licensing expert. She focuses on a diverse list of picture books, young adult books, and heavily-illustrated non-fiction titles, especially titles that can make her laugh out loud (bonus points if to the point of tears or snorting!). On the nonfiction side, she’s specifically looking for prescriptive (especially geared toward parents, millennials, and generation Z), memoir, pop culture, and illustrated.

Lish McBride is the author of funny and creepy young adult books such as Hold Me Closer, Necromancer; Necromancing the Stone; Firebug; Pyromantic, and the forthcoming Curses. She has published short stories in the Normal School, Tor.com, and the anthologies Cornered, What to Read in the Rain, Freaks & Other Family, and Kisses & Curses. She got her BFA in creative writing from Seattle University and her MFA from University of New Orleans. Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults title, Morris Award finalist, and won the Scandiuzzi Children’s Book Award.
