In my career, I have studied (and rescued) dolphins from the deck of a tuna boat, trained seals and sea lions, scuba-dived under 15 feet of ice, done stand-up comedy, directed plays, and spent winters in Antarctica. I’ve been a biologist, professional dancer, laboratory manager, college professor, professional diver, research assistant, and photographer. And, of course, a writer.
I’ve covered many subjects in my published work, including travel, science, natural history, human interest, scuba diving, the environment, writing, teaching, science fiction, and fantasy. I have published three books on Antarctica, a manual on scientific diving in Antarctica, and numerous articles and essays. My memoir, Antarctica: A Year at the Bottom of the World, is still considered by many to be the best contemporary account of life in Antarctica. Discover magazine named my collaborative work with Norbert Wu, Under Antarctic Ice, one of the 20 best science books of 2004.
Currently, I am writing a science fiction trilogy for middle grade. Book 1, The Talisman of Elam, was published in 2010. Book 2, The Hand of Osiris, was released in 2013. Book 3, The Treasure of Hathor, is scheduled for release in December 2015.
Originally from San Diego, I now live in New Hampshire with my wife, son, and a small, panting dust mop that some people think is a dog.

The Hand of Osiris
The Hand of Osiris is the second book in the Children of Hathor trilogy. Set in the present day, the trilogy chronicles the story of Jason Hunter and his two friends, who find themselves embroiled in a galactic power struggle. In Book 1, Jason claimed a powerful, ancient talisman, the remnant of a long-dead race whose technology was so advanced it seems to work like magic. In Book 2, Jason and his friends must use that talisman to steal two others in an effort to avert a terrible war. Unfortunately, all is not as it seems. Stealing the talismans almost costs them their lives, and their success in acquiring the devices turns them into fugitives from every race in the galaxy.
