I've won awards in all genres, with fiction in Paris Review and non-fiction in The New York Times. Three novels are in print, and another will appear soon, and I have three books of stories as well. The latest, MOVIEOLA!, earned gratifying attention; J.C. Hallman, in his review, called it "a new shriek for a new century." Earlier, the Pulitzer winner Richard Ford praised one of my novels as "a rich feast."
THE SEA-GOD'S HERB, a selection of my book reviews and criticism, bringing together work that had appeared everywhere from The New Republic to Quarterly Conversation, was published in 2014. I continue to do a lot of such work. Meanwhile my journalism, in particular on Italian subjects, has turned up everywhere from GQ to Ninth Letter.
Grants include an NEA Fellowship and an Iowa Major Artist Award. I've held good visiting appointments at Harvard, Northwestern, Lewis & Clark, and elsewhere.
