In the mid-1960s the author of The Last Cavalryman served as an infantry soldier in the division that General Truscott had once commanded. Ferguson used his G.I. Bill to earn degrees in English literature and public administration, and then served over thirty years with the Seattle Police Department, retiring as chief of operations. After retiring he taught and consulted on criminal justice issues.
