About

Patricia Schultheis is the author of A Balanced Life, published September 2018, by All Things That Matter Press and of St. Bart’s Way, an award-winning story collection published by Washington Writers Publishing House in 2015. She also is the author of Baltimore’s Lexington Market, published in 2007. She has received awards from The Fitzgerald Writers’ Conference, Memoirs Ink, the Nob Hill Branch of the League of American Pen Women, Winning Writers and Washington Writers Publishing House. She also is a member of The National Book Critics Circle and the Authors’ Guild and holds degrees from Albertus Magnus College as well as the Johns Hopkins University.

A Balanced Life

2018

A Balanced Life is a memoir using ice skating as a metaphor for life. First conceived of as a wry examination of aging and why I spent so much time pursuing a sport for which I have no apparent talent, the tone and the issues turned serious following a series of devastating losses, culminating in the death of my husband. The book’s focus then became an examination of questions of time and how we choose to spend it, the values we assign to accomplishment, and how to get up again and recover from loss. Each chapter begins with an introduction about an aspect of skating, which sets that chapter’s theme. The style is lyrical and the structure is recursive, much like the nature of memory itself.
